Frequently asked Questions:

Tell me more about the Parish Council

The civil Parish Council has had a continuous existence from 1894. It is the second tier of local government, below Cheshire East Council. The Parish Council can and will act on behalf of the whole of the community, and as a result may well achieve more than a resident acting as a single voice.

Am I eligible to be a councillor?

To be eligible you must:

  • be over 18 years
  • be an elector of the parish, or;
  • for the whole of the previous 12 months have occupied (as owner or tenant) land or other premises in the parish, or;
  • during the previous 12 months have worked in the parish (as your principal or only place of work), or;
  • for the whole of the previous 12 months lived in the parish or within three miles of the parish boundary.

How much time does it take up?
HPC meets once a month, in the evening, in Henbury Church Hall. Members of the public are also invited. Meetings usually last around two hours, depending on the agenda. Councillors also choose to spend time dealing with various issues that arise, and you may attend other meetings, for example with Cheshire East.

Is the work paid?
No – councillors give up their time for free. Due to the flexible nature of the job, several councillors successfully fit the work around full-time jobs and family commitments.

Is training available?
Yes. HPC is a member of the Cheshire Association of Local Councils, who run regular training courses for new councillors. Books are also available.
